Newsweek’s online site has a “web exclusive” by Matthew Philips with dramatic detail on how that New Zealand fishing boat caught a live and wiggling (and apparently single-mindedly hungry) colossal squid a few weeks ago. Fans of real-life monsters will love this tale. And, one reads that — while its kinfolk octopuses are pretty brainy, as invertebrates go — the colossal squid is “one of the stupidest creatures in the sea.” One guesses that means even stupider than fishing industry tycoons who send fleets to Antarctica to catch (or, as some say, to mine) slow-growing toothfish, aka Chilean sea bass.
