NYTimes Biz Section: The chemistry of biofuels without subsidized corn

The Times has a better hed than that one above: “Fuel Without the Fossil,” over a story by Matthew L. Wald on the myriad arms of applied research all aimed at turning wood, brush, and other plant debris into fuel. The focus is on chemical means for doing so, rather than on the usual route of microbial fermentation into ethanol or similar combustibles.

Wald ranges mainly across the US bringing word of a “flood of investment capital into both biological and chemical techniques for using biomass” and the experts’ opinion that it is too early to call a winner.

The story, part of the Times’s ongoing Energy Challenge project, serves as another instance of the paper’s heavy investment in such news, covered with an eye cocked toward climate science and the planet’s future.
