CBC Quirks and Quarks: A top ten list for the times (you think recession is bad?…)

Here’s a jocular way to shout certain doom for us all – and to make the mere business cycle look like a gentle tickle. On CBC’s radio program Quirks and Quarks host Bob McDonald draws up a list of top ten ways the Earth can end. He talks to appropriate academic authorities who good naturedly lay out each in dramatic apocalyptic terms. If any of our descendants are to be so unlucky they may expire in a black hole’s rock-busting tides, an exploding star’s gamma ray storm, a red-giant’s photosphere, an asteroid’s or comet’s happenstance aim, and so on. Maybe the Earth itself will do us in, supervolcano or magnetic reversal take your pick. Or the galaxy will demagnetize and pancake us, oh my!  Then there’s that old chestnut, the alien invasion. Oh fun. The intros to each item are alone worth the listen. This is a labor-intensive bit of rollicking, scary fun.
