Financial Times: Areva, big French nuke company, hits more snags

ArevaFinlandReactorIt’s just a short piece, but in Financial Times is one by Peggy Hollinger that raises yet another alarm flag over a verity among US enthusiasts for a revived, growing nuclear power sector. Which is, in essence, “Why not nuclear?  Look at France. They have lots of it. They know what they’re doing so what are we waiting for?” It says here that three nations, including France itself, are worried over the control and safety systems in the latest reactor design, called EPR, from the big French firm Areva. The company says it will change things to settle such concerns. One hopes so. But with a costly installation slowed by construction snags in Finland and no sign from any manufacturer that the immense cost rise of  nuclear plants will abate, the seemingly imminent nuclear renaissance in the US and lots of other countries looks like more talk than action (and yes, China and India are still building nukes at a significant pace. And Russia is trying hard to finish its overseas projects including that big one in Iran).
